A doula? Whatta?

The Dutch media publishes every once in a while an article about doula's. In Dutch of course and only sometimes in English about giving birth in the Netherlands. Merely positive but sometimes also negative stories find their way to the public. Our (in)famous Dutch home birth culture has made it more difficult for Dutch doula's to explain how a doula differs from a first line midwife. Usually, the expat clients know better from their home countries what a doula can do for them than the Dutch pregnant women. But patience and many words have had their effect, since more and more people know what the doula trade entails. Nowadays, the postpartum doula's are going through the same phase as their fellow birth doula's went through a few years ago: time to explain over and over (and over...) again the differences between a 'kraamverzorgende' and a postpartum doula. A maternity caretaker is another unique person in our Dutch birth culture who is unknown to any other country and makes our Dutch midwifery system one of the best in the world.

It's hard to find English written articles about doula's in the Netherlands. There are many articles throughout the world about doula care, very easily found. Those articles will not be quoted here.
